Obituary of William Douglas Patterson

William Douglas “Doug” Patterson passed away peacefully at home on December 18, 2024. Married to the late Susan Patterson (Auld). Loving father of Steve Patterson and Christin (Ryan) Barber. Beloved Grandfather to Dylan, Matthew, Brooklyn, Sky, and Reid. Doug was born in Petrolia, Ontario to the late Ruth (Armstrong) and James Patterson on July 12, 1947. He was predeceased by his brother Murray. Survived by his sister Carol and brother-in-law Wayne McColl, and sister-in-law Doris (Wilson) Patterson. Also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Doug dedicated most of his working life to farming alongside his dear friend David Ferguson. He felt most at home on a combine and took great pride in his work. One of his greatest joys was sharing his love of the land with his wife, children, their spouses, and his grandchildren, often taking them on tours of the farm and fields across Lambton County. His encyclopedic memory of the area's people and places made these moments even more special.

Doug was known for his extensive use of “Doug-isms”. It’s sad he never got to write a book about half the things he didn’t know, but he’d have to have remembered half the things he didn’t hear to have done that. He was also a philosopher, asking deep questions of the universe like “If well endowed women work at Hooters, do one legged women work at IHOP?”. Doug had a delightfully devious teenage mind you either loved or hated - but you could always be assured he was pleased with himself regardless.

Doug enjoyed sports his entire life. Most fondly, he was a member of the 1971 “Big Red Machine” Alvinston Indians All-Ontario Intermediate "B" Baseball Champions, who in 2003 were inducted into the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame. His love for baseball and the many stories he shared have been passed down to his children and grandchildren.

As per Doug's wishes, no service will be held, and cremation has taken place.

Charitable donations in Doug’s memory can be made to the Municipality of Brooke-Alvinston to support Minor Baseball programs.

Do not mourn for Doug; he rests now in Susan's arms.

Arrangements have been entrusted with Denning’s of Watford.
