Kathy, Melissa, and all the McEwen, Zavitz family members...
I was in the states over the holidays and did not find out until turning my phone on when entering Canada and finding a text from Shannon regarding the accident. I am so very sorry for your loss. Lawrence was a wonderful person and left this world much too early.
I am not 100% sure about the date, but I think Kathy and Lawrence were engaged on Christmas Eve. I remember being at the home of Kathy's parents when it happened. My daughter, Tiffany, was about 4 at the time and had a terrible crush on Lawrence. She was pretty quiet during the party/get-together but, when we got home, she started to cry and asked me: "Does this mean Lawrence isn't my boyfriend anymore?" I have just emailed her the news reports, and I know she will be very sad to hear of your loss, too.
My deepest sympathy to you all, and my apologies that, once again (as when Ernest passed), I was in the states and unable to attend the funeral...

Dear Kathy, I am so sorry for your loss. Lawrence will be sadly missed. I looked forward to his work visits to Minnesota. He had become a friend to me over the years. I remember the first time I invited him to my home for supper and sauna. He told me that he travels alot for work. Both in Canada and the US, and this was the first time anyone had invited him to their home. I told him that I had stayed in hotels, and thought he could use a little break from them. A home cooked meal and sauna , he agreed. I looked forward to his visits.
You are in my prayers.

Lawrence’s death seems such a terrible loss and we wonder why. Job said, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” We neither know nor understand why Lawrence has been taken away but we know that the Lord does not do anything in error nor does He do anything without reason. We also know that He brings good to all who put their faith and their trust in Him; we have to have faith that this is so and we simply wait upon Him. Lawrence has left this broken world and has gone to a far better place and, if we similarly put our trust in Him who calls us home, we will see him by and by when the Lord calls us to leave this life. The Lord calls us all to faith in Him and it is our responsibility to accept His call just as Lawrence accepted it many years ago. God is with Lawrence’s family as they now face life without him but with Him who is our all in all.

Lawrence was a huge part of my childhood and teenage years. He was my buddy and he took care of me, ferrying me around to various events near and far in his shiny black truck, roller skating and just hanging out. Nobody had a truck when we were kids but Lawrence did. He had worked hard to get it. I remember he would call me up to see if he could come over for a haircut...I did a terrible job but he would always pay me and we had lots of laughs together. Lawrence was generous and fun and sweet and I always felt at home with him even as we were separated by time and distance. This gem of a person is gone from us far too soon. I will love him forever and love you guys. We will not stop praying for God's comfort to you and in time we will all see him again in glory.

Kathy, no words adequately express our sorrow and nor can they convey the love we have for you. What we can tell you are the same messages of love and hope that you already know and have heard. We are with you - and all the Zavitz and McEwen family members.
A day will come when we are reunited with those we love. Until then, we cherish them and the moments God gave us to spend with them. While we don't always understand His plan while we are here, we know He has one. We celebrate Lawrence and the remarkable impact he had on people around him. A true pillar of the community, Lawrence will be celebrated by us until we reunite.

I was shocked when I heard the news. I pray that God will give his family and freinds the fortitude needed to get through this tragedy. I remember Lawrence as a 12 year old boy. 40 years ago in the summer of 1974 he would occasionally go with me (I worked for his father Harold as a plumbing apprentice) on jobs. I have lived in Michigan for over 25 years and had owned a home near the St. Clair County airport. I remember what a wonderful family they had. I extend my best to Irene and Harold and the rest of their family. They were (and are) some of the nicest people I have ever met and were strong examples of a Christian family. God Bless all of you! Words cannot express the loss we feel in the death of our nephew Lawrence. For some reason unbeknown to us, God decided he needed Lawrence with Him and called him home. We have been blessed to have had those 52 years. We have watched him grow from a curly haired, blue eyed youngster into a loving husband to Kathy, an adoring father to Melissa, a cherished son to Irene and Harold and a wonderful brother to Wilbert and Lorraine.
Most importantly Lawrence had a strong faith and love for his Lord. He was a great example to others by his actions and beliefs. We as fellow believers have that "Blessed Hope" that we will meet again. Lawrence we know according to Gods word, you are absent from the body and present with the Lord. Until we meet again, much love, Aunt Margaret and Uncle John

Since learning of this tragic event I have been praying for the Lords strength and comfort to uphold you all. No person would make it in their own power. I grew up with Lawrence and always enjoyed having a visit however short they were when I would visit my folks .
We had many adventures as kids, spent every weekend at church and youth groups, and shared many interests. My daughter Amberley shares an apartment with Melissa, and as such found it a difficult Christmas to be joyful.
Lawrence has left us all too soon and with many gaps that will be hard to fill , and some never. My only consolation is that he was prepared to meet the Lord . May the Lord carry you through the days and weeks ahead, If I can help I will.

Lawrence was my Cousin and being a few years older than I he was also a mentor to me in my late teenage and early adult life. He was a very generous man who would stop at nothing to lend a hand,a tool, some expertise or a valued hobby toy. I remember him lending me his brand new motorcycle for a day when I was all of 17 yrs old and barely broken in to motorcycling! I stood up with Lawrence at his wedding and was part of his 25th anniversary celebrations a few years back. Lawrence was a man I was very fortunate to have known and spent time with. He was a very intellegent man and was of strong moral fiber the likes of which is not seen very often in our world. No words can adequately express the tremendous loss and sorrow we feel, and our hearts pour out to Kathy and Melissa for your loss; plus Uncle Harold and Aunt Irene; Wilbert, Lorraine and your families as you too cope with this sudden loss of a son and a dear brother.
Being the same age, Lawrence and I played a lot as kids and grew up together through our teenage years with cars and motorcycles; and as adults whenever we came together we always enjoyed many conversations revolving around airplanes and aviation from either one of Lawrence's latest adventures or memorable vistas from the cockpit, to stories and antics from my Air Force past. Always a great conversation, and next to his family, flying was Lawrence's other passion.
It's with sadness in our hearts as we say goodbye way too soon, but we know you have moved on to the Lord, and are now in good company with Earnie, Sam, and Grant, together all looking down from heaven and watching over us. We'll miss you Lawrence!
