Dear Steve
I'm lighting this candle today, in loving memory of you,
on what would have been our 22nd Wedding Anniversary.
Since you left us 3 months ago today, I miss you terribly,
I remember you fondly and I'll love you forever.

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Fred Lavji, and I am one of Steve's friends. It is with great sadness that I stand in front of you today to celebrate the life of my friend. Steve's life was taken away from us too soon, and it is hard to understand why tragic things like this happen to such good people. However, this is a question without an answer and we should not dwell on the loss of our dear friend, husband, father and grandfather.
Today let's celebrate his life and remember all of the remarkable things Steve accomplished and how wonderful his life was. I am sure he would want us to celebrate his life. I met Steve and Bev shortly after they moved to this area in 1998. Steve was a kind, loving, caring and generous man, and I immediately knew that he would be a friend for life.
Steve loved to golf and was a regular in my foursome. You never knew when the foursome was going to turn into a fivesome, but it always did. When Steve hit a bad shot, he would yell "Jesus!" and that's when I started worrying that the ranger might throw us off the course for golfing as a fivesome.
Steve's signature hole was the 11th hole at Indian Hills. It's a 150 yard par 3. It's an island green, surrounded by water. His performance on this hole over the years earned him the nickname of Aquaman. On more occasions than not, his first attempt to hit the green would end up in the water, but before it splashed he would have reloaded and was ready for the second attempt.
Steve and I were Bridge partners, and nothing pleased him more than to beat the wives. Of course the game wasn't complete without the mandatory ribbing from Steve and I.
I will miss him dearly.
Rest in peace, my friend.

Steve was truly a best friend. Warm, affectionate and super relaxed. We won't have to tell him to tie up his shoe laces any more. He was always there if you needed him; loved helping others; a sympathetic listener if that's what was required; but equally quick to insert the needle, give it a twist, and laugh with delight. Steve could get along with anyone, but he had little patience for those who thought they were superior.
In high school, five of us became life-long friends. We lost Vic White two years ago, but Ron Boyle from London, and Dave Scott from Jamaica, stayed close to Steve. Dave even named his son after Steve. Back in our school days, competition was fierce in table tennis and golf, but the laughter and good times are what we remember now.
Steve's mom, Helen, was a very special woman - warm, humorous and loving - and welcomed his friends into their home. On one occasion, trying to shock his mom, Steve announced that he had learned all about V.D. during health class and proudly recited all the medical terminology. He was completely stumped when Helen smiled and asked "How do you get it? She was so proud of the man he became.
In 1965 Steve was an usher at our wedding, and Dale was best man for Beverley and Steve in 1991.
We never think of Steve without thinking, "perpetual motion". It made him a great guest - repairing things, wiring the cottage, barbequing dinner. We learned to save some jobs and eagerly awaited their arrival.
Over the years we've travelled on many trips together, especially to the Caribbean. We particularly recall St. Kitts - chasing the monkeys off the putting green and then Steve and Dale imitating them. That day they made really great monkeys. When we went on a driving trip to Nova Scotia, we were thankful that we thought to take our own car. Steve's habit of being on the road by 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. somehow clashed with our concept of a "holiday". Nonetheless, we played a couple of marvelous golf courses and enjoyed fabulous sea food. And as always, Steve walked the rough searching for golf balls for his grandchildren.
Beverley and Steve are blessed with a wonderful family. Steve had so much love for them all, and reveled in their accomplishments, but he was especially proud of all their grandchildren.
We'll miss you, Steve, the best friend we could ever have.
Lovingly, Dale and Joy Stringer

Worked with Steve for 25 years and played golf with him at Cherry Downs for many of those years. Those of us who played with him knew he had a sometimes temperamental hook and also that he liked to find used balls. His signature hole at CD was the 18th where almost miraculously he seemed to find the heavy bush just left of the tee. The greenskeepers were the Cherry boys and they had a black lab called Bogey who ran about loose on the course. One day Steve is teeing off and Bogey is watching intently. Sure enough he duck hooks it into the rough where it is not findable. But Steve is unperturbed he says it was just an old xx'd out ball. However Bogey goes lunging into the bush and in seconds comes back with a ball in his mouth which he drops at Steve's feet. Steve picks it up and with his classic grin from ear to ear, he says: brand new Titleist! Bogey is long gone but I am pretty sure he has a good collection for Steve at his new course. Hope you hit'm straight, buddy.

Bev and Steve were our wonderful neighbours on Barvale Court in Etobicoke for many years before they moved away in 1998. They were very friendly and supportive to everyone on our street. I remember seeing Lisa and Mark grow up. My daughter Diana became very fond of their cat K.C. and when Diana was about 10 years old, she was given the big responsibility of feeding K.C. when Bev and Steve went on vacation. Later she was asked to feed Cajun too. Steve was always such a nice gentleman. He was also very serious about keeping his front lawn meticulous. In the summer one would see him constantly pulling weeds! Theirs was one of the best kept lawns on our street. Although these things happened so long ago, fond memories are always kept and treasured…Dear Bev, please take good care of yourself, and may you find some comfort knowing your friends are thinking of you and sharing in your grief.

Like hundreds of others, I too worked with Steve at Honeywell and have nothing but great and positive recollections of the time I spent knowing him. We weren't part of the same functional organization and as such, Steve was always more open and candid during our many chats; advice and knowledge I valued greatly then and even more so during my future working years. Some of my tenure at Honeywell was at a little known location known as 'McNicoll' (a name some used for their cottage as an excuse for early Friday departures!) where Steve was considered the 'senior guy.' While I have many great memories of Steve, including a few opportunities to meet with him again years later at a few Honeywell Alumni meetings, I'll always remember him in his starring role as the McNicoll tour guide for the then divisional GM in a humourous video aired at a company kick-off ending with the GM departing on a chauffeur driven snowmobile! My condolences to all who knew Steve, especially to his family and relatives and to all his friends.

I had worked for Honeywell for six years prior to joining the computer division in 1965, first setting up a repair depot then as Logistics Manager. One of the first jobs after joining the computer group was going to Welland to meet Steve and help him set up an old 422 printer at Atlas Steels. It took us most of the night finishing up and crashing at Steves place. The next morning the phone rang and it was Steve bck at work and telling me that breakfast was in the fridge. When I looked there was one egg and one orange in the fridge. I spent many years working with and working for Steve and knowing Steve as a friend living in nearby Bay Ridges in Pickering. After leaving Honeywell in 1991 and Pickering in 1994 I moved to Blenheim. Later I was told that Steve was in Southwest Ontario but unfortunately we didn't meet again. He was a good boss, style a little different, but always fair and a very good friend, Rest in peace, Ron & Doreen Hurst

When I was growing up we spent a lot of time with my Aunt Helen and Steve. I can't remember spending Christmas or any other important holiday without them. Steve was like my brother. I always looked up to Steve, as did my brother and sister. He held a very special place in my Mom and Dad's heart. They actually waited for Steve to be born so that they could set their wedding date. My Dad always loved to go golfing with Steve. They had so much fun together.
He was a very important part of my life. He always had such a great sense of humour and had the best laugh. He really found the joy in life.
I will miss Steve very much and my heart goes out to Mark, Heather, Lesley and Laura and your families.
